Press conference (05/28/19):
(Start network. Cameras open to a table set on a raised platform with three nameplates spaced along the top.)
(Flashbulbs off screen frantically snap as each Japanese pro wrestling legend enters the room and sits at their designated position. There is very little interaction between the three before Sakaguchi initiates the press conference.)
Sakaguchi: Thank you so much for being here today. Welcome fans, staff, and associated press. Today we officially announce the launch of our new pro wrestling promotion ... King’s Road Puroresu!
(Iwatami and Takayama look mildly agitated as Kohei takes lead.)
Sakaguchi: As we move forward in this new endeavor, we will both honor our traditions and innovate the future. We believe our time honored sport is truly ready to be delivered to a worldwide audience. Yesterday’s traditions will meet today’s technology and fans of Japanese puroresu will be the benefit.
(Sakaguchi smiles and raises one hand over his head in his signature pose for the press. A flurry of flashbulbs.)
Iwatami: (nonchalantly) King’s Road represents the Evolution of combat sports in a professional wrestling ring.
(Iwatami cuts off Sakaguchi’s pose and fanfare much to his dismay. Sakaguchi, slighted, sits as the mma legend continues from his seat, straight forward and no nonsense.)
Iwatami: Japan has long been the leader in this violent art form. King’s Road will have a recruitment focus in Japan, but is excited to welcome gaijin athletes from across the world. This diversity of techniques and disciplines will make for an exciting form of hand to hand combat.
(Small awkward pause. Photographers snap rare Iwatami photos in public, outside of a cage or a ring. Takayama notices the empty air in the room and stands to the podium nicely dressed in suit and tie.)
Takayama: Our traditions are paramount. King’s Road was developed in order to maintain our time-honored technique. However, we embrace alternate disciplines and backgrounds. We understand styles make fights and diversity creates those opportunities. King’s Road will be a test to our way of life. Will our technique prevail when matched against lucha, catch, and all other fighting styles? This will be determined through large events, smaller tours, and annual tournaments. As we embrace the future, we strive to showcase our new brand on King’s Road World, our new streaming platform. King’s Road World will feature both large and small live events, supporting content from our athletes, and partnering promotions’ content. Our long established tradition will be broadcast for the entire world to see.
(A mild rumbling of approval begins as a small smile begins to stretch on Takayama’s face.)
Sakaguchi: (interrupting) Don’t sell them short. We are THE NEW brand in puroresu! King’s Road ... ichiban!
(Takayama shakes his head, adjusts his tie, and begins meeting quickly with members of the press. Iwatami walks off the back edge of the stage quickly and exits view before most recognize his departure. Sakaguchi can be seen glad-handing with money backers and shoving fake smiles in front of cameras. Meanwhile, the steadfast Takayama makes time for each individual reporter as he watches his flashy counterpart exit while shouting signature catchphrases. Cameras fade. End network.)
